Context behind the Story: Avery Scholarship

The Avery Scholarship is real!!

Well, it's called the Avery Award now. The award was actually created by Jeannette Arsenault and Don Maxfield and their staff in appreciation of the legacy of L.M. Montgomery and the "Spirit of Anne". It's at the University of Prince Edward Island, and is given out every Fall semester.

This award supports students that are interested in L.M. Montgomery and want to pursue writing while at UPEI.

In the book, this Avery Scholarship is won by Anne and both fuels and resolves the tensions between her and Gilbert Blythe. This scholarship allows Anne the ability to go to college and continue her education.
