Context behind the Story: Avery Scholarship

The Avery Scholarship is real!!

Well, it's called the Avery Award now. The award was actually created by Jeannette Arsenault and Don Maxfield and their staff in appreciation of the legacy of L.M. Montgomery and the "Spirit of Anne". It's at the University of Prince Edward Island, and is given out every Fall semester.

This award supports students that are interested in L.M. Montgomery and want to pursue writing while at UPEI.

In the book, this Avery Scholarship is won by Anne and both fuels and resolves the tensions between her and Gilbert Blythe. This scholarship allows Anne the ability to go to college and continue her education.

Context behind the Story: Prince Edward Island?

Where is Prince Edward Island?

So, yes. Prince Edward Island (PEI) is a real place. This was a shock to me as well, but also really exciting because I want to visit one day.

So if you look at this map, PEI is a province of Canada that's northeast of Maine, and sort of nestled between Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.

PEI is the smallest province both in land area and population, but it's also the most densely populated.  The capital and largest city is Charlottetown. Its primary economy is in farming, which holds true to what we see in Anne of Green Gables with Matthew and all the other farmers.

If you're looking for a few reasons to visit, here's some articles and travel guides that might persuade you to go!

Read-alikes!

If you've gone through all those lovely adaptations, now might be the time to branch out and try some other books that are similar or maybe about Anne's world! Again, not exhaustive, but just to get you started!

Not ready to leave Anne's world completely? Bring it to you with these books!

Try some others outside of Prince Edward Island! (based off literary bent, a young female lead, spunky attitudes, and a heartwarming and realistic tale):

Adaptations of Anne

There are so many different ways that Anne has been brought to life since her original inception by L.M. Montgomery in 1908. She's been imagined in various books like the graphic novel, and on the screen and even in musicals!

Here's just a few to add to your to-be-read, to-be-watched or even to-be-heard! There are even more, but these are good places to start.

A Summary...

Anne of Green Gables: the graphic novel

Anne Shirley, a highly imaginative 11 year old with fiery red hair and a temper to match, has never known as stable home since her parents died when she was a baby. Taken from home to home to work as a nanny to children not much younger than she, it's a huge change when she hears she is to be adopted by a pair of siblings on Prince Edward Island.

Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert are expecting to pick up a boy form the train station after deciding to adopt an orphan to help them manage the family farm. When Matthew returns with Anne instead, their lives are turned upside down. However, soon the entire town is a little bit different at the arrival of this girl.

This graphic novel follows Anne as she makes new friends, finds new adventures and changes the lives of all she encounters in little ways. From triumphs and thrills to the depths of despair, Anne finds the extraordinary in the ordinary, letting magic seep into each day.

About this Genre:

This story would fall into the realistic fiction, perhaps also coming of age as a sub-genre. It's less of a romance but more about adventure and finding magic in the everyday experiences we all have. Given the age of the piece, it could be considered historical fiction as well.

Read a Review (or two):
